JobStreet to provide outplacement support for retrenched Sony employees

Business

Leading online employment portal JobStreet is stepping in to help retrenched workers affected by the eventual closure of Sony Malaysia’s manufacturing plant in Prai, Penang.

The Sony plant will cease operations by September this year, and be completely shut down by March 2022, affecting some 1,757 local employees.

While some employees would be transferred to Sony’s other Malaysian plant located in Bangi, Selangor, others are set to be retrenched.

Enter JobStreet, which had been appointed as the exclusive appointed party for Sony’s outplacement campaign to help affected employees transition to new jobs.

JobStreet will be executing this complimentary campaign, and involves two main thrusts.

Firstly, it involves a recently concluded workshop to provide insights into the current job market, and how affected employees can maximise their future career opportunities with JobStreet.

The workshop will also teach them on how to build their resumes to get noticed, while maximising opportunities through the JobStreet platform.

JobStreet has also customised a microsite for affected employees to deposit their resumes, so that participating Northern Region hirers could then access them.

Its country manager Simran Kaur expressed empathy for affected Sony employees, more so since the country is undergoing Movement Control Order (MCO).

She advised affected employees to capitalise on this collaboration between JobStreet and Sony, and to showcase their strengths for the jobs that would be placed on the microsite, coupled with various other opportunities in similar sectors.
